Job Description:

We are looking for a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our Area 51 Team at our headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. (a beautiful suburb of Kansas City). Area 51 is Garmin's internal product Research & Development team. From kids wearables and hybrid watches to the latest lidar and sonar technologies, we are in constant pursuit of new markets and cutting edge technologies. As a senior mechanical engineer, you will support these product and technology concepts throughout the exploration stages until transferring it to the product team. Also, as part of the A51 team, you will have opportunities to contribute as an "intrapreneur" - we will surround you with a team of innovators with diverse skill-sets. If you're looking for an opportunity to bring your unique skills and perspective to a team focused on learning and venturing into uncharted territory, we want to speak with you!Essential functions include:Must be passionate, enthusiastic and enjoy exploration and hands-on workMust effectively demonstrate a self-starting, results-oriented, positive, proactive, solution-focused approachMaster CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasksAbility to customize existing, or develop new test methods to substantiate otherwise unverified aspects of product designsExplore innovative mechanical concepts and complete complex mechanical designsReview CAD assemblies for technical feasibility and apply first hand experience to risky itemsMock up and test complex mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirementsGood knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc.Good knowledge of material requirements, material performance, and material limitationsSpecify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirementsExcellent tradeoff management skills and ability to mitigate riskAbility to make estimates on complex and risky Mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design timeExcellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand the riskKnowledgeable of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibilityMentors and provides guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (1 & 2) on all aspects of mechanical designProvides technical input to product development plans and concept documentsProvides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniquesOffers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as requiredApplies good judgment in setting schedules and risk takingExemplifies Garmin's Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin's image and cultureIndependently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problemsApplies knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineeringAssociates are expected to integrate, use, and provide feedback on products in development when possible as part of their normal job responsibilitiesLeads explorations of new technologiesParticipate in recruiting activities as assignedPerform other job-related duties as assignedOverseas travel as requiredQualified candidates possess a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other requirements include: Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designsDemonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skillBonus points if you have:Electronic packaging design experienceNever been to KC?
