Title: Specialist Curator Faith, Religion and WWI Reports to: President & CEO The National WWI Museum and Memorial is Americas leading institution dedicated to remembering, interpreting, and understanding the Great War and its enduring impact on the global community. We hold the most comprehensive collection of WWI objects and documents in the world and are the second-oldest public museum dedicated to preserving the objects, history, and experiences of the Great War. Through the support of the Lilly Endowment Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative, the Museum and Memorial has established an endowed curator position on faith and religion, and funding support to strengthen public programming on religion and war, enhance online exhibitions and resources on faith and religion, and increase its collection of religious objects and materials. The Museum and Memorial takes a non-partisan, non-sectarian interpretive approach. Position Summary: The Specialist Curator Faith, Religion and WWI is responsible for the care, growth, and management of historic objects in the National WWI Museum and Memorials collection that relate to peoples experiences of faith and religion. This includes implementation of the collections acquisitions, conservation and exhibition activities in this area of focus. Additional responsibilities include research and interpretation as applicable to exhibition preparation, disseminating results of that research through publications, exhibits, lectures or other means. Working closely with the Senior Curator and Director of Archives and Research Center Manager, and other appropriate staff, the Specialist Curator Faith, Religion and WWI is responsible for ensuring the Collection continues to be professionally maintained and properly cared for; and that new acquisitions are accessioned into the collection in a timely fashion and fully documented. The incumbent is expected to embrace the National WWI Museum and Memorials stated mission and core values and demonstrate support for them through professional interactions and performance of job duties. This is a full-time, exempt position. Responsibilities: Active acquisition responsibilities globally and curation of museums collection that relate to peoples experiences of faith and religion. Responsible for maintenance of relevant artifacts storage, cataloging, packing and shipping. Participates as a member of the Museums Collections committee, and advises Board of Trustees, committee members and other staff on collection matters. Conducts research related to peoples experiences of faith and religion. Develops exhibitions that relate to peoples experiences of faith and religion, concept, design, label writing and installation of exhibitions. Primary contact of artifacts and WWI information for public inquiries in specialist area. Serves as the museum resource on subject matter for media interviews, locally, nationally and internationally. Collaborates with Development in grant application projects and fostering of potential benefactors relating to artifact acquisitions, or other related matters. Ensures acquisitions are accessioned into the collection in a timely fashion and fully documented. Partners with Curator of Education to meet educational objectives. Provide outreach and public presentations, including VIP tours. Performs other duties as assigned. Education and Experience: Advance degree desired in WWI history, religion and faith, anthropology or relevant study areas, museum studies or closely related studies. Extensive knowledge of professional museum principles, practices and procedures especially in collections management. Possess knowledge of the history and material culture of faith and religion and/or WWI. Knowledge of research tools, methodology and accessible presentation of information. Good communication skills. High level of interpersonal skills. Self-directed and motivated. Previous supervisory experience.
