Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Software Engineer - Device
Telemetryin our Olathe, KS location. We welcome self-motivated,
passionate, and creative individuals who are well-versed in
embedded software engineering and also DevOps principles. Come work
with us to centralize our software systems that gather and manage
telemetry data from our fielded devices. This team partners with
our product teams to bring support and excellence to the domain of
telemetry and logging.Essential Functions
- Develops advanced software solutions that support and
streamline telemetry management
- Advocates and promotes the existing logging best-practices and
techniques widely across Garmin
- Advances the Garmin state-of-the-art for telemetry reporting
and embedded observability
- Partners with legal and privacy teams to define the boundaries
of data collection in accordance with privacy regulations
- Prototype new technologies and systems to support team
objectives
- Decomposes functional requirements into well-defined tasks
- Researches fundamental problems and implements algorithm
solutions that are appropriate
- Offers peer technical assessments in areas of expertise, new
technologies and software designs
- Assists design engineering as needed with component datasheet
review and schematic design review
- Participates in project leadership and/or program planning
including providing technical input to product development plans
and concept documents
- Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project
goal/objective feasibility and applies good judgment in setting
schedules/risk taking
- Mentors and/or supervises to less experienced Software
Engineers (1 & 2)
- Contributes to advanced technical research on new
technologies
- Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new
procedures as appropriate
- Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult
problems using sound problem solving techniqueBasic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering,
Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering,
Math, Physics or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant
experience OR an equivalent combination of education and
experience
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to
3.0 as a general rule)
- Proficient with C/C++ and Python
- Experience developing and building embedded software
- Demonstrated knowledge of logging, observability, and data
management.
- Experience with software development quality methodologies such
as design review, code reviews, continuous integration, regression
testing and static code analysis
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and
interpersonal communication skills
- Valuing teamwork, fostering a positive environment, and
collaborative spirit
- Ability to decompose functional requirements into well-defined
tasks while balancing quality, quantity, and complexity in work
output
- Demonstrated capability to offer peer technical assessments in
areas of expertise, new technologies and software designs
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and
interpersonal communication skills
- Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and
a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the
ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven
environmentDesired Qualifications
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to
3.5)
- Experience with containerization technologies such as
Docker
- Experience with data analytics, data scraping or scripted
collection, visualization and/or big data processing
- Experience with web technologies such as JavaScript, REST,
etc.
- Experience with databases such as MySQL or InfluxGarmin
